MIAMI, Florida (August 8, 2008)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today expressed outrage at the murder of a television cameraman in the Dominican Republic and called for an immediate in-depth investigation into the crime by authorities.

Normando García, a cameraman for the program “Pachanga Mix” and “Detrás de las Noticias” (Behind the News) programs on Santiago’s Tele Unión Canal 16 TV station, was shot to death by assailants who drove by while he was talking in the street with a friend who was also killed.

Gonzalo Marroquín, chairman of the IAPA’s Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, made a public statement calling on Dominican authorities to identify and punish those responsible for the crime “as the only way to put a stop to these violent acts.” At the same time Marroquín, editor of the Guatemala City, Guatemala, newspaper Prensa Libre, offered his condolences to the victim’s family and colleagues.
