Miami (October 8, 2008)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) wound up its annual meeting yesterday with adoption of 20 resolutions that will be sent to officials in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Venezuela, among other countries in the Americas, to demand action on issues ranging from the murder of journalists to discrimination in placement of government advertising.

The principal objective of the IAPA’s 64th General Assembly, held October 3-7 in Madrid, Spain, was to review the state of freedom of the press in the Western Hemisphere, the discussion of which led to the resolutions, which also deal with such issues as access to information, attacks, human rights, special jurisdictions and the impunity surrounding crimes against journalists.

The resolutions, country-by-country reports and the meeting’s conclusions are posted on the IAPA Web site www.sipiapa.org in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
