Miami (May 30, 2012)—With the participation of more than 80 students, journalists and media employees the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), in conjunction with the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji), tomorrow begins a two-day seminar in Rio de Janeiro on reporting under risk in Brazil.
The seminar, titled “Reporting Under Risk in Brazil: Tim Lopes, 10 Years Later,” in which members of the press in Argentina and Paraguay are also taking part, will be held May 31 and June 1 at the Rio de Janeiro High School of Propaganda and Marketing (ESPM-RJ).

In addition to discussing and providing tools to reduce risks while covering the news the event has the dual purpose of marking the 10th anniversary of the murder of TV Globo reporter Tim Lopes, who was investigating in a Rio de Janeiro shantytown reports of sexual exploitation and drug trafficking when he was killed on June 2, 2002. As part of the homage to his memory there will be presentation of a documentary filmed by journalist Bruno Quintella, Lopes’ son.
Also scheduled are five panel discussions that will focus on the various kinds of risks, what can be done to deal with them and what is being done to prevent them by news companies, reporters and photographers, and the inter-American system.
The seminar is part of the IAPA’s Impunity Project, sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
