EL SALVADOR Report to the Midyear Meeting Caracas, Venezuela March 28 - 30, 2008 Press freedom did not come under serious attack during this period. No initiatives have been taken by the government or any other group against a media outlet for its journalistic work or for critical reporting. However, access to information at the Supreme Court has been irregular. General elections will be held in the first quarter of 2009. In this period leading up to the campaign season, tensions are already emerging between political parties and media outlets, particularly involving officials of the leftist party FMLN. Among other developments, gang leader José Alfredo Hernández was arrested on October 16 in connection with the September 20, 2007, killing of journalist Salvador Sánchez Roque, who had been a contributor to the Maya Visión, Radio Cadena Mi Gente, and YSUCA radio stations. The motive behind this crime has not been established yet. On January 17 the Salvadoran Journalists Association (APES) announced that William Chamagua, director of the radio station Mi Gente, received death threats over the phone. Station representatives fear that the threats are related to the station’s critical reporting.
