DOMINICAN REPUBLIC There have been no restrictions of press freedom, but the authorities' inaction on a number of outstanding cases cast doubt on their commitment to solve them. One is the 1975 murder of reporter Orlando Martinez, in which two former generals and two enlisted men have been arrested as suspects but no trial date has yet been set. One of those detained became seriously ill and was freed. Another case is that of columnist Narciso ("Narcisazo") Gonzalez, who disappeared without trace in 1994. On August 5, President Leonel Fernandez delivered to the attorney general a report on the investigation into the matter carried out by a specially-appointed commission of high-ranking Air Force and police officers. There are no suspects in the case.
