DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
The situation of the Dominican press has not changed in the past six months. The National Congress has progressed substantially in its consideration of a bill that would amend current articles in election campaign legislation that the Dominican press regards as harmful to its rights and affects
freedom of expression.
In June, a member of the National Police killed journalist Juan Carlos Vasquez of the evening newspaper Ultima Hora.
The incident sparked a wave of heated criticism from the majority of Dominican media, which demanded the policeman be punished. He is now on trial.
