HAITI
The media remains completely under the thumb of
the military government. The repression and coercion
against journalists, espedally those in radio, continue
without change.
Recent cases reported include:
* On May 11, youth leader Valentín Villard was arrested
for being in possession of a photograph of ousted
President Jean Bertrand Aristide. His family said he was
beaten by security police. He was freed on July 14.
* On May 23, radio reporter Cuy Delva was beaten
and given a death threat while covering a demonstration
outside a school in Port-au-Prince.
* Hughens Voltaire, a reporter for the Boston-based
weekly Finesse, was injured and had to be hospitalized in
the Haitian capital on June 1 after interviewing two students
who had been roughed up by security agents.
