A new electoral law that imposes conditions on political
advertising and polling is a theoretical threat to press freedom, but in practice the government has not
enforced the restrictions.
Libel charges against a newspaper in Santiago have
been filed by the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), led by
former president Juan Bosch, but the newspaper has experienced
a swelling of public opinion in its favor.
