the news media must carry out their duties free from threats, no matter their nature or origin
the recent FLMN attack against employees and property of El Diario de Hoy and defamatory and threatening statements agalnst the newspaper's editor constitute obvious intimidation that harms and threatens freedom of expression
there is a systematic effort on the part of some political parties to require obligatory membership in journalists "colegios" and to propose, through members of Parliament, legislation on the right of reply and the practice of independent joumalism
THE 49TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF IAPA RESOLVES
to urge all Salvadoran political parties represented in the Legislative Assembly to reject legislation that would limit freedom of expression and the free exercise of joumalism
to condemn the aggression against El Diario de Hoy and to reaffirm the right of independent media to report and express opinions on events that affect the communities they serve, free of coercion or acts of force
to send a special IAPA mission to El Salvador to meet with all the parties and to reiterate the IAPA's concern.
