Effective and ongoing support is being given by newspaper readers throughout the Americas to a campaign that the IAPA is waging regarding crimes against journalists going unpunished, adding their voices by going online to the campaign Web site. With their signatures recorded as of October this year more than 300 readers associated themselves with a note to the president of Brazil, in which in addition to acknowledgement by the state of Bahia of its share of responsibility in the 1998 murder of journalist Manoel Leal de Oliveira a request is made for legal proceedings in the case to be reopened. In November, in light of a wave of crimes in Mexico that included the murder of several journalists, 440 signatures added support to a note to President Felipe Calderón. Each month the IAPA publishes an ad in the press of the Western Hemisphere concerning the still-unpunished murder of a journalist and asks readers to join with it, through the Internet, in applying pressure to the federal government of the respective country to have the crime solved and the guilty punished. Those wishing to join in this campaign can do so by going to http://www.impunidad.com/index.php?showcarta=33&idioma=us and inserting your details in the Demand Justice! box.
