PGR Opens Hotline for Journalists

La Jornada (June 25, 2005).- The Mexican Attorney General’s Office (PGR) launched a citizen’s hotline for cases of attacks against journalists that will be answered by staff from the Assistant Attorney General’s Office on Human Rights, Victims Support and Community Services, as part of a program of the federal agency to “strengthen freedom of expression for journalists.”

The Mexican Attorney General’s Office (PGR) launched a citizen’s hotline for cases of attacks against journalists that will be answered by staff from the Assistant Attorney General’s Office on Human Rights, Victims Support and Community Services, as part of a program of the federal agency to “strengthen freedom of expression for journalists.” In a press release, the PGR announced the opening of this hotline whose objective is to "guarantee the freedom and independence of journalists and to strengthen their rights and to prevent attacks against freedom of expression and the confidentiality of information for those working in the industry.” The citizen’s hotline for cases of attacks against journalists will open today (June 25) and has a toll-free number 01 800 PERIODISTAS, for the interior of the country and 5346-4218 in Mexico City, where specialized agents of the Attorney General’s Office will receive complaints on actions that threaten freedom of expression and the journalists’ confidentiality of information.
