Dr. Daniel Fernando Soria Chief Justice, Supreme Court Buenos Aires Province La Plata, Argentina Determined to put an end to impunity surrounding crimes against journalists the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), in conjunction with the international community, calls your attention to the not quite fully completed proceedings in the January 25, 1997 murder of news photographer José Luis Cabezas. A number of those accused in the case were freed from detention on a decision from a lower court that the Supreme Court of which you are the chief justice overruled, ordering the return to prison of those found guilty of the crime, thus not allowing there to be impunity. The signatories of this letter, readers of newspapers throughout the Americas, see the ruling of the Supreme Court as highly positive and would ask for you to personally ensure that it is duly carried out and thus that those involved in the murder of Cabezas serve their sentences in full.
