Mr. Felipe Calderón President of Mexico Los Pinos Presidential Residence Mexico City Dear Mr. President, Determined to put an end to the impunity surrounding crimes against journalists the Inter American Press Association, together with the international community, calls your attention to the disappearance of Mexican journalist Rafael Ortiz Martínez which occurred on July 8, 2006 in Monclova, Coahuila. The state governor at the time said he believed that Ortiz, who had received death threats for his exposures, was abducted by drug traffickers. Despite this the inquiries have not advanced and there are still no suspected perpetrators under arrest or brought to trial. We would ask you, Mr. President, to do whatever is necessary for the investigations into the Ortiz Martínez case to move ahead, so as to determine the missing man’s whereabouts and bring those responsible to justice. The IAPA is determined to put an end to impunity, a task in which it has the wide support of newspaper readers throughout the Americas who have added their signatures to this letter. Sincerely,
