Receiving an IAPA scholarship signifi ed a “before” and “after” in my professional and personal life that is diffi cult to summarize in few lines. It allowed me to do a Master’s in Journalism and Public Affairs, majoring in Radio and Television at American University in Washington D.C., where I was one of the fi rst South Americans to graduate in the School of Communication.
I was selected to be a teacher’s assistant. This opened the doors to enriching internships: at WAMU, the local NPR station that ranked second locally, and then reporting for the BBC. On my return to Uruguay I worked three years at the AFP and also produced information for CNN en Español. I branched out into television and am now a journalist and co-host of “Código país”, a political news program on Uruguay’s most-watched broadcast channel.
I could write for hours about what it meant to live in Washington D.C., a place that generates news every second and where people come together from around the world. It was an unforgettable experience that I always recommend to all my colleagues.
