Starts next Tuesday with an important agenda for the entire month of May!
Miami (April 30, 2014)—Marking the 20th anniversary of the Declaration of Chapultepec, the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) begins next week a series of ) webinars to promote principles on freedom of the press and of expression among students, journalists and the public in general.
The series of webinars will be held beginning next Tuesday, May 6, and will take place on subsequent Tuesdays up through the General Assembly that the IAPA will hold in mid-October in Chile. They will focus on the 10 principles of the IAPA-inspired Declaration of Chapultepec drafted in 1994. This initiative has the support of the James McClatchy Fund of The San Francisco Foundation in California.
Claudio Paolillo, chairman of the IAPA’s Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information and editor of the Montevideo, Uruguay, weekly Búsqueda, declared, “This digital tool makes it possible for us to meet our objective and responsibility, not only to defend press freedom but to promote it.”
José Roberto Dutriz, chairman of the IAPA’s Chapultepec Committee and President of the Dutriz editorial chain of El Salvador, added, “This is a an excellent way to promote public conversation and debate on the problems that we as students, journalists or members of the public confront every day in dealing with the question of freedom of expression in our countries.”
In this first stage the webinars will be in Spanish. They are part of the training strategy of the IAPA’s Press Institute’s Digital Center, which holds webinars every Thursday on matters of the press and the news industry in general.
Following is the agenda of the Chapultepec webinars scheduled for May:
· May 6, Claudio Paolillo, Chairman of the IAPA Press Freedom Committee;
· May 13, Santiago Cantón, Director of the Robert F. Kennedy Center;
· May 20, Catalina Botero, Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights;
· May 27, Eduardo Ulibarri, Costa Rican ambassador to the United Nations.
The IAPA has extended a special invitation to the universities belonging to the Latin American Journalism Education Accreditation Council (CLAEP), and to other universities often participating in its Chapultepec and Impunity programs, to incorporate these webinars in their educational curriculum.
