Today, more than ever before, our continent is shrinking and what is news in Argentina or Brazil, may also be of great interest to your readers in Los Angeles or Corpus Christi, or vice versa. IAPA can provide you with the network to keep your readers up with matters that touch them, but that occur abroad.
We are the largest organization of its kind with over 1,300 daily newspapers and on line media outlets devoted to monitoring and promoting not only freedom of the press and of expression, but crimes against journalists, educating the executive, legislative and judiciary branches of the different countries on matters of interest, and providing training seminars, content and networking opportunities to our members.
We hold two annual meetings, one in North America and the other in Latin America or the Caribbean, where our members, besides networking and attending seminars on matters of current interest, discuss the threats to freedom of the press and of expression in the continent while enjoying the local sights.
We have exciting projects currently underway, including a campaign to stop impunity in crimes against journalists; to promote the principles of the Declaration of Chapultepec - a benchmark for a free press in the Americas - and eliminate restrictive legislation that contradicts its principles; and to raise the level of standards in journalism education in the region through an accreditation process, as well as scholarships for deserving students and other worthwhile activities.
How can you get involved? First, you can join one of our many committees that oversee various projects within the organization, such as Impunity, Chapultepec, International Affairs, etc. You may also want to participate in our fact finding visits when we send members to trouble spots in the region to speak with national leaders.
But first and foremost, you can show your support us by joining IAPA.
Please join our organization and help us defend freedom of the press and of expression in the Americas! It will be a rewarding experience.
