He was Editor of La Opinión, a spanish-language newspaper in Los Angeles that his father founded in 1926. He studied journalism at the University of Notre Dame. In 1976 he was ambassador of the United States in El Salvador. He was a member of the California Advisory Committee for the United States Civil Rights Commission.
