IAPA Scholarships

What is the IAPA Scholarship Fund?

The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) Scholarship Fund was established in 1954 to finance graduate studies in journalism, communications, or a related field in a Latin American country, the United States, or Canada. More than 400 journalists from the Americas have benefited from IAPA Scholarships, pursuing postgraduate studies at prestigious universities across the continent.

Since its inception, the Scholarship Fund has been supported by voluntary and generous contributions from foundations, media partners, organizations, and individuals. It currently has an investment fund that provides contributions for the scholarships awarded annually.

Since 2019, following a reform of the IAPA Statutes, it has been managed by a Scholarship Committee, whose president is elected by the president of the institution. Previously, the Scholarship Fund was an autonomous organization.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, and given the conditions created in news organizations by the rapid transition to new digital technologies and the need for new professional skills in journalism, the Scholarship Fund created the IAPA-CLAEP Journalism Diploma Program, which annually awards scholarships to dozens of journalists for this 11-week virtual learning course.

The scholarship recipients receive instruction from top professors from universities accredited by the Latin American Council for Accreditation of Education in Journalism and Communication (CLAEP), a program of the Inter-American Press Association.
