Carlos Castro, director of the Facebook-based outlet Código Norte Veracruz, was killed on January 8, 2026, in the city of Poza Rica, in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. He had reported receiving threats, and in 2024 he was granted protective measures that were withdrawn months before the crime.
