IAPA names finalists in Brazil student competition

MIAMI, Florida (October 4, 2012)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today announced the names of the 14 finalists for the “J&F Young University Student IAPA Brazil Award” which for the first time the organization is to grant in recognition of the best works carried out by Brazilian students in the text, photo and video categories.

MIAMI, Florida (October 4, 2012)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today announced the names of the 14 finalists for the “J&F Young University Student IAPA Brazil Award” which for the first time the organization is to grant in recognition of the best works carried out by Brazilian students in the text, photo and video categories.

The winners will be announced on October 16 during the IAPA’s 68th General Assembly that will be held this month in São Paulo, Brazil, and also posted on the Web site www.sipuniversitarios.com.br.

The award, which has as its theme “freedom of expression in our daily lives,” is aimed at university students taking part in courses recognized by Brazil’s Education Ministry and was set up by the South American country’s Newspapers Association (ANJ) in commemoration this year of the 70th anniversary of IAPA’s founding.

The finalists in the text category are: Caio Felipe Ferreira Carvalho and Catarina Fonseca Bogéa (São Paulo); Allan de Gouvêa Pereira and Igor Patrick Silva (Minas Gerais); Camila Requião Faraco (Rio Grande do Sul), and Felipe Lins da Costa Campos (Bahía). Those in the photo category are: Marcello Junior Lopes Dantas and Marina Muniz Mendes (Goiás); Francisco de Paula Vieira (Mato Grosso do Sul); Marco Favero (Paraná), and Tatiane Gonsales Campagna and Alessandro Pelosof (São Paulo). In the video category: Rodrigo Mateus Franco Belga (Rio de Janeiro) and Teresa Cristina Ribeiro (Goiás).

The materials produced will be available for publication in the Brazilian media that belong to the IAPA General Assembly’s Host Committee – O Estado de S. Paulo, Folha de S. Paulo, Editora Abril, O Globo, Zero Hora, Diários Associados, Gazeta do Povo, O Popular, A Tribuna and Correio Popular.

The IAPA will be holding its half-yearly meeting October 12-16 at the Renaissance Hotel in São Paulo to review the state of press freedom in the Americas.
