WHEREAS the Host Committee headed by IAPA President Matt Sanders, Deseret Digital Media, and Ryan Stephens and Sara Lewis, also of Deseret Digital Media, and also made up of Derek Miller, World Trade Center of Utah; Frank Roth, the Utah Governor's Office of Economic Development; David Utrilla, Consul of Peru in Utah; Elke Opsahl, Visit Salt Lake City; Keith Atkinson, Church of the Latter Day Saints; Ed Carter, Brigham Young University; Baldomero Lago, Utah Valley University, and Kadee Duclos, Utah Media Group, worked with dedication for the success of our General Assembly and offered their hospitality to provide an atmosphere of cultural exchange and friendship

WHEREAS the following companies, institutions and individuals, Deseret Management Corporation, the Foundation of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints, Edward Seaton, Google, Protecmedia, doTerra, Matthew and Jennifer Sanders, Elizabeth Ballantine, Arc Publishing / The Washington Post, Xinhúa, Brandforge, World Trade Center Utah, ie Business School, Reliable Controls Corporaton, Family Search, Hispano Post and Western Governors University, offered generous sponsorships to enable the success of the meeting

WHEREAS Utah State Vice Governor Spencer J. Cox dedicated words of friendship and solidarity with the press during the opening ceremony and he was presented to the General Assembly by Matt Sanders, who in addition gave the presidential address

WHEREAS in the Friday seminar titled "News Integrity Initiative" Professor Jeff Jarvis of the City University / Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism, New York, together with Rosental Alves of the University of Texas in Austin, offered an interesting and pleasant session with which the official program of the 73rd General Assembly was initiated

WHEREAS in the second session of the day of seminars Davis Smith of Cotapaxi, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Gabriel Wurcel, of Philip Morris International, New York, spoke on how to rethink and rebrand the image of news media businesses for the new environment on the basis of strategic and creative marketing on digital platforms, and Brad Thatcher of Thatcher + Co., New York, served as moderator

WHEREAS the company that headed the Host Committee, Deseret Digital Media, designated its executives Eric Bright of KSL Marketplaces; Laura Montoya of BrandForge and Saúl Leal of Global Business Development to demonstrate their innovative practices during Friday's third seminar, which was moderated by Julio Aguirre, also of Deseret Digital Media

WHEREAS in the day's final panel discussion, titled "The new technological newsrooms," there acted with much skill Matt Monahan of The Washington Post, José Luis Gómez Carpintero of Protecmedia, Madrid, Spain, and in continuation Jonas Rideout of the New York company Piano, spoke on the trend in the press industry toward charging for contents of quality, and the session was moderated by Ed McCullough of Miami, Florida

WHEREAS the participants in the General Assembly were provided with an elegant and pleasant welcoming reception on the part of the Host Committee at Salt Lake City's Grand America Hotel

WHEREAS at midday on the Saturday the executive editor of The Washington Post, Martin Baron, conversed with those attending on current issues and ethics and the credibility of the press, and as conductor of that dialogue Doug Wilks, editor-in-chief of Deseret News, Salt Lake City's main newspaper, gave his participation

WHEREAS thereafter, during the lunch, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, gave an eloquent speech after receiving the IAPA's Press Freedom Grand Prize and he was introduced by former IAPA president Danilo Arbilla, Montevideo, Uruguay

WHEREAS that after the presentation of the report on the situation of press freedom in Venezuela, the Secretary General of the OAS expressed its solidarity with the establishment and the validity of democracy in that nation

WHEREAS the prestigious professor at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, Pablo Boczkowski, gave details of research concerning the perception of readers of news that is published about United States President Donald Trump and which, in addition, gave rise to a pleasant exchange of ideas among the participants

WHEREAS on the Saturday evening Elder D. Todd Christofferson, member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints, gave the IAPA delegates a message titled "Faith, Family and Freedom" as the key part of a dinner offered by the Host Committee in which friendship could be shared

WHEREAS at midday on the Sunday journalists Gerardo Reyes of Univisión, Miami, Florida, Lourdes de Obaldía of La Prensa, Panama City, Panama, and Faboo Sales of O Estado de S. Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil, took part in an interesting discussion of the international investigation into public corruption that has revitalized the importance of investigative journalism in our times, and the moderator of the session was Miguel Franjul, Listín Diario, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

WHEREAS the first panel discussion on Cybersecurity had the participation of a distinguished panel made up of Michael Kaiser, National Cybersecurity Alliance, Washington, DC; Alison Treppel, OAS, Washington, DC, and John McClurg, Cylance, Irvine, California

WHEREAS during Sunday's lunch the IAPA handed the Presidential Award to the legacy of Gary Neeleman and his wife Rose Neeleman, who in 1988 helped organize the annual IAPA meeting in Salt Lake City

WHEREAS in the second panel discussion on Cybersecurity there were presentations by experts Stephan Somogyi, Jigsaw/Google, New York, NY; Stephen Cobb, Cyber Security Mac Antivirus, San Diego, California; Robert Jorgensen, Utah Valley University, Orem, Utah, and Michael Kaiser, National Cybersecurity Alliance, Washington, DC

WHEREAS on the Sunday afternoon Dany Bahar, Brookings Institution, Washington, DC; Moisés Rendón, Center for Strategic & International Studies, Washington, DC; Miguel Henrique Otero, El Nacional, Caracas, Venezuela, with Idania Chrinos,, Bogotá, Colombia, as moderator, offered various points of view concerning the Venezuela crisis, one of the key topics of the General Assembly

WHEREAS the dinner and ceremony of presentation of the IAPA Excellence in Journalism contest awards was held at the Salt Lake City Natural History Museum and the vice chairman of the Awards Committee, Carlos Salinas, El Diario de Coahuila, Saltillo, Mexico, headed this act, which also featured the musical presentation of the Rumba Libre band

WHEREAS on the Monday morning a panel made up of Javier Palomarez, US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; Natalie Gochnour, The University of Utah, and as moderator IAPA President Matt Sanders dealt with the issue of the new commercial relations between the North and South of the hemisphere

WHEREAS during the lunch on the Monday the main speaker was Laurent Cordier, executive director of Google Global Partnerships, and Fabricio Altamirano, El Diario de Hoy, San Salvador, El Salvador, was in charge of introduction of the speaker

WHEREAS in the program's final presentation Paul Boyle, of News Media Alliance, Arlington, Virginia, spoke on the sustainability of news media in face of the domination by the Google and Facebook companies on the monetization of contents on the Internet

WHEREAS the General Assembly's closing ceremony took place during reception-dinner at the Little America Hotel in which the new president of the IAPA, Gustavo Mohme, gave his inaugural address of the coming period

WHEREAS that Carlos Jornet, La Voz del Interior, Argentina; Claudia Gurisatti, NTN24, Colombia; Oswaldo Quintana, RCTV, Venezuela; Daniel Dessein, La Gaceta de Tucumán, Argentina; Osmín Martínez, Diario Las Américas, United States and Juan Pablo Illanes, El Mercurio, Chile; contributed in the coordination, compilation and edition of the reports, resolutions and conclusions of the Assembly.
