WHEREAS President Dina Boluarte has unfoundedly criticized the press for investigating and uncovering the origin of her jewels
WHEREAS that in the Congress of the Republic of Peru, bills have been introduced that are detrimental to freedom of expression, press, and information, such as one that seeks to extend prison sentences for defamation and another that would criminalize the dissemination of effective collaboration processes and would include journalists and the obligation to reveal their sources
WHEREAS that the Public Prosecutor's Office, the National Police, and the Army have followed, monitored, and spied on Peruvian journalists
WHEREAS the risk of the lifting of the secrecy of investigative journalists' communications
WHEREAS the lack of action by Peruvian authorities concerning radical civilian groups that intimidate journalists
WHEREAS, Principle 10 of the Declaration of Chapultepec states, "No media outlet or journalist should be punished for disseminating the truth or formulating criticisms or denunciations against public power."
THE IAPA MID-YEAR MEETING RESOLVES
To condemn Peruvian public institutions that persecute, intimidate, harass and insult the press
To request the Congress of the Republic to refrain from presenting bills harmful to freedom of expression, press, and information in compliance with the provisions of international instruments on the subject
To request the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Judiciary to respect the constitutional right to the protection of sources of information handled by the press
Urge public authorities to act against abuses and aggressions by radical civilian groups that intimidate journalists.
