Presentation of the 2025 Great Friend of the Press Award to Redacciones5G, Pedro López Matheu, Director of External Communications, Sustainability and Media at Telecom Argentina

October 17, 2025

It is a true honor to present today the 2025 IAPA Great Friend of the Press Award, a distinction that goes beyond a simple act of recognition. This award embodies the spirit of solidarity and support that journalism needs in order to stay alive: the commitment of those who believe in its transformative power and in its indispensable role within modern democracies.

Media sustainability is going through one of its most delicate moments. Economic pressures, the rapid pace of technological change, and the influence of large companies within the digital ecosystem have redefined the rules of the game, testing the independence and viability of newsrooms. In this context, the practice of journalism—free, professional, and committed to the truth—becomes more necessary than ever.

And it is precisely in these uncertain times that the IAPA reaffirms its purpose. We believe, with deep conviction, that journalism is a cornerstone of democracy. It is the best antidote to dispel the darkness of disinformation and the voice that provides meaning, context, and empowerment to citizens.

That is why we are so pleased to announce that the 2025 IAPA Great Friend of the Press Award is being presented to Redacciones5G, represented here by Pedro López Matheu, Director of External Communications, Sustainability and Media at Telecom Argentina.

This award represents the highest distinction our institution grants to those who have made decisive contributions to strengthening journalism throughout the Americas. Redacciones5G has been much more than a collaborator—it has been a true ally, a partner in building the future.

Since its creation, Redacciones5G has brought artificial intelligence and digital innovation closer to newsrooms, transforming fears into opportunities. Its accomplishments speak for themselves: over 350 media outlets in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Bolivia; more than 10,000 journalists trained; and 3,000 students guided in their professional development.

But beyond the numbers, what we value most is the spirit of its projects. The Guide to Journalism and Artificial Intelligence, its newsletters, podcasts, and the Mojo Academy are not just resources—they are tangible forms of support for newsrooms seeking to adapt and grow amid constant transformation.

They are living proof that journalism can and must evolve without losing its essence.

On behalf of the IAPA, we want to thank the entire Redacciones5G team for their leadership, vision, and commitment to the future of journalism. May this recognition also serve as a reminder: journalism has a future when it has genuine allies—those who believe in its power to transform.
