WHEREAS, the climate of violence and the political, economic and security crisis in which the country finds itself, as well as the proliferation of armed gangs and anti-government protests, keep journalists in a situation of defenselessness and high risk

WHEREAS, the dangerous and insecure environment in which the press carries out its work has resulted in the murder of three journalists since April (six in 2022), an attempted murder, a kidnapping, physical attacks, and attacks and damage to three journalistic facilities

WHEREAS, Le Nouvelliste - the country's oldest newspaper - announced the temporary suspension of its circulation and two other media outlets have also been severely affected by the energy and fuel crisis

WHEREAS, Principle 4 of the Chapultepec Declaration states: "Murder, terrorism, kidnapping, coercion, intimidation, unjust imprisonment of journalists, physical destruction of the media, violence of any kind, and impunity for perpetrators severely curtail freedom of expression and of the press. These acts must be promptly investigated and severely punished."

THE 78TH IAPA GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLVED

To ask the government to guarantee the preservation of freedom of expression and the free and safe exercise of journalism.

To urge the press organizations of the Americas to express their solidarity and support to journalists and media outlets that continue to carry out their informative mission despite the high-risk circumstances.
