WHEREAS that the media play a fundamental role before, during and after emergencies caused by natural phenomena

WHEREAS the devastating consequences of Hurricane Otis on the state of Guerrero, Mexico, which impacted Acapulco in the early morning of October 25, 2023, as a category 5 storm, with sustained winds of 265 km/h

WHEREAS the preliminary estimates on the number of fatalities, missing persons, homes and businesses affected

WHEREAS the importance of the support that society requires from the press to have timely and truthful information for its own recovery

WHEREAS the incessant criticism and accusations from the government against journalists for the information coverage given to the impact of the phenomenon

WHEREAS the unrestricted commitment of the media and the Inter-American Press Association with the people of Acapulco and Guerrero, Mexico.

THE 79th IAPA GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLVES

Extend your solidarity to the people of Acapulco and Guerrero after the devastation and crisis situation that they still suffer

Ask the government of Mexico to suspend practices that threaten the exercise of freedom of the press; and that journalistic work in building a better public conversation be recognized

Urge the heads of the different orders and institutions of the Mexican government not to attempt to silence or modify the coverage provided by the media and journalists and, on the contrary, to consider the advantages of having a reliable and critical press for the benefit of society.
