Message from Michael Greenspon, IAPA President
2023 Grand Prize for Press Freedom to Carmen Aristegui
Saturday, November 11, 2023
Good afternoon/evening to all those joining us in this ceremony.
With great enthusiasm and pride, it is my honor to recognize a remarkable journalist today—Carmen Aristegui. She is acknowledged in Mexico and internationally as an exemplary figure for her ethical and practical work spanning over 36 years in radio, print, television, and online journalism.
While Carmen has primarily focused on investigative journalism, many critical topics, some uncomfortable for those in power, have also made her a symbol of courage in reporting on matters of great public interest that have sparked national debate and attention.
It is precisely due to her impact on journalism, democracy, and freedom of expression in Mexico, her dedication to bringing to light stories that have been rejected or ignored by other media, that Carmen has been honored with awards such as the Maria Moors Cabot Award, the Gabriel García Márquez Journalism Award, the Knight International Journalism Award, and the National Journalism Award, among many others, both nationally and internationally. Now, IAPA adds to her long list of accolades with the Grand Prize for Press Freedom, the most prestigious award bestowed by our organization.
At IAPA, we want to acknowledge your journalistic work, which we consider essential in allowing us, from abroad, to understand responsibly and independently the complex political, social, and economic dynamics of this great country.
In a world where press freedom often faces challenges, we also want to highlight your inspiring commitment to truth and journalistic integrity. The dedication you have shown in informing, questioning, and empowering society through journalism is seen as a fundamental act for the functioning of a healthy democracy.
For IAPA, your courageous work defending truth and transparency is a beacon of hope. May your award serve as a reminder of the vital importance of a free and fearless press in our world.
Congratulations!
