Miami (April 28, 2026) - With the distinguished participation of Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) President Pierre Manigault, the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla will host the 14th International Meeting of the Latin American Council for the Accreditation of Education in Journalism and Communication (CLAEP) from May 13 to 15, an important academic forum to reflect on the future of journalism.

Under the theme “Journalism, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Democracy,” the event will address key issues such as media ethics, disinformation, automation, technological governance, and the transformation of the media ecosystem.

The agenda will include keynote speeches, panels, and presentations that will foster dialogue among academics, media professionals, and students. IAPA President Pierre Manigault will preside over the meeting organized by Uninorte’s Department of Social Communication and Journalism, which will bring together the Communication and Journalism faculties accredited by CLAEP, an organization affiliated with the IAPA. Also participating will be IAPA Executive Director Carlos Lauría, as well as CLAEP Executive Director Juan David Bernal and President Norberto Frigerio, respectively.

The program features prominent scholars such as Carlos Scolari and Sebastián Valenzuela, Gerardo Reyes—a renowned journalist from Univision’s investigative unit—and Catalina Ruiz-Navarro, editor-in-chief of Volcánicas magazine and a leading figure in gender-focused journalism, who will offer diverse perspectives on the contemporary challenges facing journalism.

The overall purpose of the CLAEP meeting is to analyze the evolution of journalism in the face of AI and its impact on democracy, through a dialogue that integrates theoretical, ethical, and applied perspectives. As part of the conference, 25 papers will be presented, selected from an open call for submissions to journalists, academics, and media professionals, who were invited to focus their proposals on six key thematic areas: journalistic ethics and disinformation; artificial intelligence, public opinion, and democracy; technological advancements and automation; regulation and press freedom; generative AI and new narratives; and the transformation of the journalism industry.

The event will also promote academic innovation through the #ClaepChallenge2026, where students will analyze real-world cases of disinformation generated by artificial intelligence and propose solutions from a journalistic perspective.

Participation is free, with prior registration required and limited spots available.
