Miami (August 21, 226) - The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) announces that The New York Times has been awarded the 2026 Grand Prize for Press Freedom, the highest distinction bestowed by the organization in recognition of exemplary and courageous contributions to the defense and promotion of free expression throughout the Americas.
The decision, conferred by the IAPA Executive Committee, honors The New York Times for its unyielding commitment to independent journalism and its rigorous defense of the fundamental constitutional principles that safeguard democratic societies. In an era marked by intensifying legal, political, and institutional pressures against news media, The Times has stood resolutely at the forefront of protecting the First Amendment and upholding journalists' essential right to uncover and disseminate matters of vital public interest.
“By resisting intimidation and defending the right to report without undue restriction, The New York Times defends not merely its own institutional prerogatives, but the essential liberties that belong to the global press and the democratic public it serves,” stated Pierre Manigault, President of the IAPA.
The award particularly commends The Times’ proactive defense against restrictive access policies, including its legal actions challenging restrictions on reporting at the Pentagon, as well as its steadfast posture in defending itself against severe legal threats, such as a multi-billion-dollar lawsuit aimed at silencing critical investigative coverage. These actions demonstrate that an independent press must remain resilient in the face of coercive efforts designed to chill public scrutiny.
Established in 1954, the IAPA Grand Prize for Press Freedom has a storied legacy of honoring journalists, news outlets, and institutions that exhibit extraordinary valor and leadership or endure severe adversity in the service of truth. The recognition of The New York Times reaffirms that rigorous, fearless, and independent journalism remains an indispensable cornerstone of democracy across our hemisphere.
The official award ceremony will take place during the 82nd IAPA General Assembly, scheduled for October 22–25, 2026, in Bogotá, Colombia.
The IAPA is a non-profit organization dedicated to defending and promoting freedom of the press and expression in the Americas. It comprises more than 1,300 publications from the western hemisphere and is based in Miami, Florida, United States.
