Miami (July 30) - The 2025 Global Summit on Disinformation, to be held in September and organized by the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), the Desconfío Project, and the Foundation for Journalism in Bolivia, has received 203 thematic proposals from journalists, researchers, academics, activists and technologists from every continent. The initiatives, coming from more than 50 countries such as India, Nigeria, Egypt, Argentina, Ukraine, Canada, Yemen, Mexico, Palestine, Venezuela, the Philippines, Spain, and Bangladesh, reflect the urgency and diversity of approaches with which different regions of the world are confronting the phenomenon of disinformation.
“The proposals we are receiving not only highlight the global nature of the problem, but also the collective effort to build responses from the local level, with intersectional, community-based, and technological innovation approaches,” said Adrián Pino, director of Proyecto Desconfío. All of these proposals will be evaluated by the Summit's Academic Committee, which will select several of them to be part of this year's program.
The topics presented cover specific experiences and critical analyses: from electoral disinformation in Ecuador and the emotional impact of fake news on female journalists in Pakistan to artificial intelligence tools for verifying videos on YouTube and youth bots that combat fake news in authoritarian regimes. Research on disinformation in armed conflicts, rural media, sexual and gender minorities, public health, climate change, sports, and visual narratives is also highlighted.
The 2025 Global Summit on Disinformation will be held on September 17 and 18, in a 100% virtual, free, and trilingual format, with simultaneous interpretation in Spanish, English, and—for the first time—Portuguese. The initiative seeks to bring together voices from journalism, technology, education, and civil society around disinformation, one of the main challenges of the digital age.
The event is supported by Google News Initiative as the main sponsor and accompanied by Agência Lupa (Brazil) and the Gabo Foundation as partners. In addition, media outlets and networks such as IJNet, ANP (Chile), AMI (Colombia), ADEPA (Argentina), the Knight Center, and Info-Veritas are collaborating as strategic allies.
