Miami (October 9, 2009)—More than 500 publishers, editors and reporters of publications from throughout the Americas and Europe will review press freedom developments over the last six months as well as future trends during the upcoming General Assembly of the Inter American Press Association in Buenos Aires, Argentina, November 6-10.
The extensive meeting program includes discussion of laws that are affecting press freedom in Argentina, Ecuador and Venezuela, court rulings that are restricting Brazilian and Colombian news media, and the violence that costs the lives of journalists in Mexico and hinders the work of Venezuelan, Honduran and Nicaraguan media.
As is the custom at IAPA meetings, participants will also debate social and political changes underway during special conferences that will feature such prominent Latin American figures as former presidents César Gaviria, Carlos Mesa and Julio María Sanguinetti of Colombia, Bolivia and Uruguay, respectively.
Innovation and creativity in the newspaper industry to overcome the financial crises around the world will also be under discussion. The five working days of the event will include a series of seminars and roundtables on successful case histories in online, sports and free newspapers, new management practices, innovations in international news agencies and investigative reporting.
