Miami (November 11, 2009). – The IAPA's country report on Cuba, presented during its 65th General Assembly that concluded yesterday in Buenos Aires, defined the outlook for Cuban journalism and freedom of expression as bleak and marked by political stagnation, the economic crisis, an increase in repression against independent journalists (102 acts of repression since April) and government control preventing free access to the Internet. The number of journalists in jail increased to 27 with sentences ranging from one to 28 years, and the police persecution of more than 70 independent journalists who are active in the country, has been extended to the growing movement of bloggers who defy state control on information and use of the Internet.
