Miami (March 31, 2011)—The Midyear Meeting of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) April 6 to 9 in San Diego, California, will feature a full schedule of seminars and panel discussions with in-depth examinations of the future of newspapers and the state of freedom of expression in the Americas by renowned speakers.

The meeting, with more than 500 delegates registered, gets underway on April 6 with the seminar “Will the Internet Destroy Newspapers or Save Them? Yes!,” chaired by Mark Willes of the Deseret News, Salt Lake City, Utah, who will explain bow his newspaper is radically reinventing itself and the key role that the Internet is playing in that effort.

Also featured is a seminar on the changes in mentality and the business model to transform newspapers, to be led by Eduardo Danilo Ruiz of the Mexican firm Danilo Black Inc., and another chaired by Craig A. Moon of Nashville, Tennessee, on the keys to reinventing the newspaper business.

A panel discussion that has aroused a great deal of interest will deal with the war on drugs, an issue of concern in United States-Mexico border towns, and a topic that will also be discussed in several reports that the IAPA issues twice a year on violations of press freedom in each country in the Western Hemisphere.

The IAPA meeting will be held simultaneously with the annual convention of the American Society of News Editors (ASNE) and will be preceded by the Hemisphere Conference on Freedom of Expression in the Americas which the two organizations will hold in conjunction with the Institute of the Americas, based in La Jolla, California.
