The issue that remains central to mainstream media is the still-to-be fulfilled promise of a Freedom of Information Act and the reform of the law relating to both libel and defamation. The Government continues to own and control the lone television station; and despite promises of licences being awarded to the private sector to operate other television station, this has not materialized. There has been some expansion of the privately-owned media, with the leading broadcaster STARCOM Network Inc., as well as The Nation newspaper, now actively involved in delivery of its products via the Internet. The other newspaper in Barbados is the Advocate Publishers (2000) Inc. which publishes daily, while the other broadcasters are Mix FM and Barbados Broadcasting Service (operators of two FM services). The production and distribution of “free” magazines covering a variety of subjects has been a growing trend in the Barbados market, as well as the emergence of the on-line publishers.
