57th General Assembly Washington, DC October 12 – 16, 2001 TOWARD PEACE WHEREAS the first sentence of the first article of the IAPA Charter stresses the contribution to peace of a world of free nations, made up of free people, as a result of honest, free and independent journalism and the objectives of the IAPA, set out in letter c) as goals of this association, are “to work collectively for the solution of common problems and for the preservation of peace and tranquility in the New World” WHEREAS the barbaric terrorist act in the United States on September 11, 2001, horrified the world by causing the death of at least 5,000 people of at least 31 nationalities WHEREAS the United Nations in Resolution 52/15, approved unanimously by its 183 member countries, proclaimed the year 2000 as the International Year of the Culture of Peace, and in Resolution 53/25 proclaimed the period 2001-2010 the International Decade of the Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the world THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE IAPA RESOLVES to condemn vehemently every kind of terrorist action, whether it is political-ideological, religious or motivated by something else to urge the members of the IAPA to make space available in their publications for the subject Culture of Peace, exposing the evil caused to humanity by terror, war, violence, drugs and fanaticism to urge members of IAPA to stress the importance of topics that value life, underlining the importance of family, faith, tolerance, social integration, education, health and the practice of acts of solidarity as well as healthy activities that give meaning to life, especially for young people to suggest to other media in the world that they join this campaign for happier and more peaceful days for humanity, with a stronger joint action that has a greater possibility of success to urge the United Nations to develop a wide-ranging project to put into practice Resolution 53/25 which proclaimed the period 2001-2010 the International Decade of the Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World that the IAPA, upon approving this resolution, set up a committee to promote these proposals with the mission of taking the issue to the General Assembly next year.
