INTER-AMERICAN DECLARATION WHEREAS the Office of the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression, with the support and agreement of the Inter-American Human Rights Commission of the Organization of American States, is drawing up a declaration in the hemisphere to defend and reaffirm freedom of expression WHEREAS that document responds largely to an initiative and an aspiration of the IAPA that the principles underlying and legitimizing freedom of expression, of the press and the right to information established in the Declaration of Chapultepec, be recognized on an Inter-American level WHEREAS the Inter-American Declaration reflects the spirit and content of the Declaration of Chapultepec WHEREAS the new declaration combines important elements to reaffirm press freedom in all its expressions which will result in an important instrument to defend these basic freedoms THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE IAPA RESOLVES to support and promote the Inter-American declaration in defense and reaffirmation of freedom of expression drawn up by the office of the special rapporteur for freedom of expression to continue within the framework of the Chapultepec project the defense and promotion of freedom of the press, of expression and the right to information and continue all actions to support the goal that the Declaration of Chapultepec be accepted and legitimized as an international convention and/or declaration.
