ECUADOR WHEREAS in August 1999 Ecuador embraced the Declaration of Chapultepec via signatures from the president of the republic, the president of the National Congress and the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Justice, all of whom committed themselves to respect the principles of the declaration and to have them respected WHEREAS freedom of expression and of the press have been menaced in recent months by physical and verbal attacks against journalists and by the promotion of laws and draft laws THE IAPA BOARD OF DIRECTORS RESOLVES to communicate with the president of the republic, the National Congress, and the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Justice to request prompt investigations aimed at identifying and punishing the persons who attacked and threatened journalists and the media, and to ask that special care be taken to ensure that bills do not contradict the Declaration of Chapultepec endorsed by the president of the republic, the president of the National Congress and the chief justice of Supreme Court of Justice.
