CANADA
WHEREAS
there have been several recent attempts by the Canadian government to restriet freedom of expression during national election campaigns, including
(a) an attempt to prohibit paid advertising comment during election campaigns by anyone except registered political parties
(b) an attempt to prohibit the release of new public opinion polling data within 72 hours before the polls close
Canadian courts have all too frequently exercised wide discretion to prohibit the free flow of information on criminal charges or other court-related actions
THE 49TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE IAPA RESOLVES
to urge the Canadian government to support, in the people's interest, the fullest and freest flow of information. A full democracy and its people deserve no less.
