BRAZIL WHEREAS • the Brazilian Federal Police has for several months been pressuring Tom Murphy, correspondent, and Patricia Saldanha, stringer, of Knight-Ridder Financial News, to reveal their sources for a news story about the Brazilian government's closing of coffee export registrations last March 21 • the Knight-Ridder Financial News story was completely in line with accepted and routine journalistic practice • the Brazilian Foreign Press Association and the Brazilian Journalists Unions have protested the pressure, which occurred as recently as October 20 THE 47th GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE IAPA RESOLVES • to strongly protest to the government of Brazil about the pressure on these two journalists to disclose their sources, and to demand that it cease it immediately.
