WHEREAS our Host Committee, chaired by the Press Association of Cádiz under the leadership of its President, Fernando Santiago Muñoz and Ángel Galán Rivera, Deputy President and Social Relations Officer, provided a very impressive atmosphere of hospitality and cordiality conducive to professional and social activities WHEREAS the Midyear Meeting received the generous support of the following organizations, which sponsored hospitable events, offered services and provided useful and informative equipment and supplies: the Consortium of Celebration of the Bicentennial of the 1812 Constitution; Cádiz City Hall; Protecmedia, the Cádiz Council; Chiclana de la Frontera Municipality; Grupo Joly; Eléctrica Comercializadora de Cádiz, and Enasa WHEREAS Cádiz Mayoress Teófila Martínez Saiz took part in the Midyear Meeting opening ceremony WHEREAS Francisco Amaral, of Cases i Associats, Barcelona, Spain; Andrés Checa Marín of Protecmedia, Madrid, Spain, and Hans Jansseen of Woodwing, Zaandam, The Netherlands, were speakers in a seminar on the new challenges in improving news companies’ work flows, which was favorably commented upon by those attending and in which the moderator was Armando Castilla, Vanguardia, Saltillo, Mexico WHEREAS in the second seminar on Friday afternoon Rosalía Lloret of Prisa Noticias, Madrid; Juan Luis Moreno, Grupo Vocentto, Madrid; José Luis Rodríguez, La Vanguardia, Barcelona, and Ignacio Gil Vásquez, El Mundo, Madrid, presented to those attending an illustrative discussion of the experiences of Spanish newspapers in digital business models, and the moderator of the session was Martín Etchevers, Clarín, Buenos Aires, Argentina WHEREAS Eduard Ramos of the Polinomi company of Barcelona, Rafael Bonnelly of ClicLogic Américas, Miami, Florida, and José Luis Orihuela of the University of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain, were the speakers in an interesting and favorably commented upon seminar on trends in the use of social media by newspapers, which in addition had Christopher Barnes, The Gleaner, Kingston, Jamaica, as moderator WHEREAS Francisco Vázquez of ClicLogic Américas, Atlanta, Georgia, offered to those attending an analysis and evaluation of the results of a unique survey conducted by the IAPA among its member newspaper editors and publishers, and suggesting the steps needed for these members to take the fullest advantage of the opportunities offered by the market and digital advertising WHEREAS on Friday afternoon Spanish historian and author Jesús Maeso, Cádiz, Spain, gave a cultural discourse on the 3,000-year-long history of the Midyear Meeting host city, with Francisco Miró Quesada, El Comercio, Lima, Peru, acting as moderator WHEREAS the chairman of the Host Committee, Fernando Santiago Muñoz, along with the chairman of the Consortium for Commemoration of the Bicentennial of the 1812 Constitution, José Luis Ayllón Manso, and the Mayoress of Cádiz, Teófila Martínez, accompanied us at the Welcoming Reception at the Casa Aramburu historic site, where IAPA President Milton Coleman, The Washington Post, Washington, D.C., offered words of thanks WHEREAS on Saturday evening there was a dinner with a Flamenco dance show hosted by the Chiclana de la Frontera City Hall which was most impressive for those attending WHEREAS on Sunday during the meeting’s first panel discussion Roberto Viciano of the University of Valencia and Center for Political and Social Studies (CEPS) Foundation and Allan Brewer Carías, Columbia University, New York, spoke brilliantly about the new Latin American Constitutions and their impact on freedom of the press, with Santiago Cantón, executive secretary of the IACHR, in the role of moderator WHEREAS a panel discussion of historical reflection made up of Manuel Bustos of the Hispano-American Royal Academy of Cádiz and Enrique García-Agulló y Orduña, court barrister and Cádiz City Hall Commissioner for Affairs of the Bicentenary, presented in perspective the legacy in how to provide information in the world of the Spanish Constitution known as “La Pepa,” promulgated 200 years ago in Cádiz WHEREAS during the Midyear Meeting opening ceremony we had the presence of Francisco Menacho, Interior and Justice Minister of the Andalusia Assembly; Elsa González, president of the Federation of Press Associations of Spain, and Teófila Martínez, Mayoress of Cádiz WHEREAS in the third panel discussion on Sunday renowned Spanish speakers Juan Luis Cebrián, El País, and Antonio Fernández Galiano, Unidad Editorial/El Mundo, presented a panoramic view of the effect of the world economic crisis on the news media of Spain and with Cristina Aby-Azar, The Wall Street Journal Americas, New York, as moderator WHEREAS during the final panel discussion on Sunday Santiago Cantón of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Washington, D.C., and Frank La Rue of the United Nations, New York, spoke about the best way to confront the attacks upon the inter-American human rights system, with as moderator President Milton Coleman, who was accompanied by Gustavo Mohme, La República, Lima, Peru, chairman of the IAPA’s Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information WHEREAS the Council of Cádiz on Sunday evening hosted a dinner with an equestrian show at the Terry Winery in Santa María port WHEREAS on Monday afternoon, in the Midyear Meeting’s final panel discussion, panelists Jaime Mantilla, Hoy, Quito, Ecuador; Victoria Camps, Autonomous University of Barcelona; Alfonso Ruiz Miguel, Autonomous University of Madrid, and Miguel Revenga, University of Cádiz, dealt with topics of great interest on the effect of freedom of expression on a healthy public opinion, which was moderated by Ramón Vargas Machuca, Professor of Political Philosophy, University of Cádiz WHEREAS as the final social activity of the Midyear Meeting, on Monday afternoon, there was offered to attendees a closing reception at the same Convention Center where the meeting was held THE IAPA MIDYEAR MEETING RESOLVES that the president, officers, directors and members express their deepest gratitude and appreciation to those persons and companies that contributed to and supported this successful meeting held in Cádiz.
