Journalist and brazilian businessman owner of the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo. He studied in Europe, returning to Brazil to attend the Faculty of Law of the University of Sao Paulo. When the Paulista State University was created, he was honored post mortem when he was designated as the patron of that University, which received his name. He died in 1969.
