Joint report on freedom of expression in Nicaragua

Miami (April 24, 2020) .- The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) joined the Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Foundation (FVBCH) and the IFEX-LAC network of organizations, in the presentation of a report on freedom of expression in Nicaragua before the United Nations Human Rights Committee.

During the 129th session, scheduled from June 29 to July 24, the Human Rights Committee, the UN body that oversees the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, will also assess compliance by the Nicaraguan government with the recommendations issued last year as part of the 2019 Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

The report recommends, among other measures, the ceased of attacks, threats, intimidating acts and censorship against the independent press and on social networks; hand over the Confidential and 100% News media to their legitimate owners and ensured the conditions for the return of the exiled journalists.

The IAPA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the defense and promotion of freedom of the press and expression in the Americas. It is made up of more than 1,300 publications from the Western Hemisphere; and is based in Miami, Florida, United States.
