It also grants El Economista of Mexico the Digital Transformation Award

Miami (August 28, 2025) — The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) announced that the Redacciones5G initiative will be recognized with the 2025 Great Friend of the Press Award, for its contribution to the growth and advancement of journalism and the media industry in the Americas.

The IAPA highlighted that Redacciones5G promotes innovation and technological adoption in newsrooms through in-person and virtual workshops on artificial intelligence applied to journalism, audience-centered content, social media strategies, personal branding, and other essential skills.

The initiative has worked with more than 350 media outlets in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Bolivia, has trained thousands of professionals, and has also contributed to preparing students in academia. Among its outstanding projects are the Guide to Journalism and Artificial Intelligence, and the Redacciones5G newsletter and podcast.

“This recognition rewards a concrete and measurable contribution: more capabilities, better tools, and a news ecosystem that adapts quickly to technological changes without sacrificing quality,” said José Roberto Dutriz, president of the IAPA, general director and CEO of La Prensa Gráfica in El Salvador.

At the same time, the IAPA announced that it is granting the Digital Transformation Award to the Mexican newspaper El Economista for the LANA (Laboratory for Automated News Analysis) initiative, an AI assistant integrated into the newsroom that, using the paper’s archive, standardizes workflows—summaries with attribution, internal sources, and topic proposals—under editorial/SEO guidelines and ethical safeguards. Focused on Personal Finance, the program speeds up verification and combines efficiency with quality, strengthening El Economista’s sustainability. This year, the Sustainability Award remained vacant.

The awards ceremony will take place during the 81st IAPA General Assembly, to be held from October 16 to 19, 2025, at the Westin Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

The IAPA is a non-profit organization dedicated to defending and promoting freedom of the press and expression in the Americas. It comprises more than 1,300 publications from the western hemisphere and is based in Miami, Florida, United States.
