IAPA announces 2011 Awards for Excellence in Journalism contest

MIAMI, Florida (November 19, 2010)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today called for entries in its 2011 Awards for Excellence in Journalism contest. Taking part in the contest, which is held annually, are the cream of the press in the Western Hemisphere. Publications and news agencies in some 33 nations in North, South and Central America and the Caribbean enter their best works in English, Spanish or Portuguese.

MIAMI, Florida (November 19, 2010)—The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) today called for entries in its 2011 Awards for Excellence in Journalism contest. Taking part in the contest, which is held annually, are the cream of the press in the Western Hemisphere. Publications and news agencies in some 33 nations in North, South and Central America and the Caribbean enter their best works in English, Spanish or Portuguese.

This year the contest will follow the same procedure of submitting entries online. “We intend for the IAPA Awards to reflect the high level of journalism being practiced in the hemisphere,” commented Clemente Vivanco of the Quito, Ecuador, newspaper La Hora, chairman of the Awards Committee.

The adjudication panel will review the entries and choose 10 finalists and the winner in each of the 11 categories during the IAPA’s Midyear Meeting to be held in San Diego, California, in April 2011. The winners will receive certificates and cash prizes during the organization’s General Assembly in Lima, Peru, next October.

The 11 prize categories are: Inter-American relations; human rights; news coverage; features; in-depth reporting; photography; cartoons; infographics; opinion; the newspaper in education, and best online coverage. Awarded in addition is the IAPA Grand Prize for Press Freedom, given to a person or organization with significant achievements on behalf of freedom of the press. In general the awards consist of $2,000, plaques and diplomas.

The IAPA is made up of more than 1,300 publications that include editors, publishers and other professionals and has for more than 60 years been dedicated to defending and enhancing freedom of the press throughout the Western Hemisphere.

The call for entries and contest rules are posted on the IAPA’s Web site, www.sipiapa.com. To take part it is not necessary to be an IAPA member.
