BOLIVIA An investigative reporter from Los Tiempos, Cochabamba, was knifed by an unidentified assailant as he left his home for the morning of August 28 on his way to interview a news source. He underwent surgery and was put in intensive care. The assault, unprecedented in recent times, sparked protests in labor circles. There was speculation drug traffickers or people involved in the growing informal economy may have been responsible. The government said it would fully investigate the incident and create a system of protection for journalists. There was no sign of any such outcome by early October.
