MIAMI, Florida (October 20, 2014)—The president of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) Elizabeth Ballantine on Sunday presented the organization’s 2014 Presidential Award to Susan McClatchy, of the James B. and Susan McClatchy Foundation of Sacramento, California, for her “silent but vital support” for the cause of freedom of expression.

Ms. McClatchy was the wife of the editor of the Sacramento newspaper Fresno Bee and former IAPA president James McClatchy, who died in 2006 and who gave dynamic support for the drafting and promulgation of the Declaration of Chapultepec, a fundamental press freedom document that is promoted by the IAPA.

“Susan and Jim traveled throughout the Americas, attending all the membership meetings and raising funds in support of urgent causes. During those visits they shared with many of you the anguish and the joy of the difficult and happy times,” Ballantine declared on presenting the recognition to Susan McClatchy during a session of the IAPA Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information on the occasion of the organization’s 70th General Assembly being held in Santiago, Chile.

Ballantine, editor and publisher of The Durango Herald, Durango Colorado, added, “Susan has displayed great generosity and open commitment with her colleagues in the battle for freedom of the press.”
