(March 28, 2023) -Thirty journalists from 16 countries in the Americas are participating in the Diploma in Freedom of Expression for Journalists, which began on March 27, under the auspices of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) and the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (UCAB) in Caracas, Venezuela.
The three modules of the course, which cover a total of 120 academic hours, seek to reinforce the principles of freedom of expression and press freedom, as well as to study the relationship between these rights and democracy and the Inter-American Human Rights System. Also, with the support of experts and academics in the areas of Communication and Law, the jurisprudence about the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) will be addressed.
"This diploma course, now in a new edition, has laid the foundations for research networks in the field. Our graduates have a valuable network in each of the participating countries, which allows them to delve deeper into human rights and freedom of expression, both in their own country and in the different participating nations," said Professor León Hernández.
Ricardo Trotti, IAPA Executive Director, congratulated the winners of the scholarship to participate in this course and highlighted "the generosity of their time and attitude to learn and review concepts on freedom of the press and freedom of expression."
The diploma course, aimed at journalists and communications professionals, is available on the platform of the International Center for Professional Updating (CIAP- UCA, in Spanish).
IAPA is a non-profit organization dedicated to defending and promoting freedom of the press and expression in the Americas. It comprises more than 1,300 publications from the western hemisphere; and is based in Miami, Florida, United States.
