IMiami (April 19, 2023) - The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has issued an open call to Ibero-American journalism for its virtual mid-year meeting to address the most relevant topics on the sustainability of journalism and the consistent violations of press freedom in the Americas.
The IAPA will hold from April 25-27 three days of meetings, conferences, and panels accessible to the public and without a registration fee. The entire program and registration link are here.
The first day will discuss the 25 country reports on press freedom. Security will be addressed among the most relevant topics to counteract murders and attacks against journalists and the media. Judicial harassment, legislation to control press freedom, and stigmatizing discourse against the press will be other relevant topics of debate.
Regarding the newspaper industry, topics such as "The reconstruction of local news" by U.S. consultant Ken Doctor will be highlighted. Later, Ezequiel Arbusti, president of Mark Tube, will present "Growth strategies for self-sufficient digital audiences." It is a panel with the participation of digital media that have achieved sustainability, including La Silla Rota, Proceso, Radio Fórmula, and Luz Noticias, from Mexico; La Diaria, from Uruguay; Prensa Libre, from Guatemala and La Prensa, from Panama.
The meeting will also discuss the relevance of the role of women in executive positions in the media. The panel "Inclusion, Leadership and Women in Journalism" will feature Martha Ramos, chair of IAPA's Inclusion and Diversity Committee and president of the World Editors Forum WAN IFRA; Laura Puertas, News Director of Panama's Corporación Medcom; Cathy Reyes, Vice President of Programming at CNN en Español; and Gabriela Vivanco, chair of IAPA's Executive Committee and publisher of Ecuador's La Hora.
Two sessions will address the topic of the moment: Artificial Intelligence and the media. On the other hand, academics from the Hemisferios University of Ecuador will present the main findings of the IAPA survey on the State of Digital Transformation. And executives from the Association of Journalistic Entities of Argentina (ADEPA) will deliver the results of extensive research on how the pandemic and post-pandemic are affecting the media.
In the geopolitical arena, a special panel on "China and Russia's propaganda and disinformation in Latin America" will also be presented on Thursday 26th. There will also be panels on media competition and content moderation with experts from Unesco and the leading press associations of the United States and Canada.
