Miami (October 18, 2023) - The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) will discuss alternatives to create safety systems for journalists and neutralize physical and legal attacks against the media during its 79th General Assembly to be held in Mexico City from November 9 to 12.
The president of the Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, Carlos Jornet, will lead the discussions of the 25 press freedom reports, which will focus on the violence suffered by journalists during the coverage of social protests, as in Haiti, in electoral processes, as in Ecuador, and due to the violence of organized crime, as in Mexico, where the most significant number of journalists have been murdered this year with four.
The results of the Chapultepec Index 2023, an IAPA barometer that measures the state of press freedom in 22 region countries, will also be revealed. As a preview, the organization reported that the Dominican Republic and Venezuela are at the antipodes of the study.
The IAPA will offer a workshop on safety for journalists during the General Assembly. It also announced that 16 media from the interior of Mexico will participate in a special training to create their security protocols as part of the Redacciones + Seguras project, which will last three months and is sponsored by Google.
A panel discussion at the meeting will address the issue of how to protect the media and journalists from violence during electoral processes. Another panel will analyze best data protection practices and digital security's importance amid political conflicts and organized crime. Finally, Joel Simon, director of the Initiative to Protect Journalism in the United States, will be in charge of the presentation entitled "Covering Democracy: Police-Press Relations."
