Córdoba, Argentina (October 19, 2024) – Freedom of expression and press freedom are facing widespread restrictions across the Americas, according to the 2024 Chapultepec Index of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA). The average of the 22 nations analyzed in the fifth edition, covering the period from August 2, 2023, to August 1, 2024, falls below the mid-range classification, marking a decline for the second consecutive year.
Carlos Jornet, Chairman of the IAPA's Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, while presenting the findings of the Index during the organization's 80th General Assembly in this city, pointed out that no country ranked in the "with freedom of expression" category, unlike the previous three years, when up to two countries were classified in this category.
The "low restriction" category of this year's Index includes Chile, the Dominican Republic, Canada, the United States, Brazil, Uruguay, Jamaica, and Panama.
The group of countries where freedom of expression and press freedom are "with restriction" includes Paraguay, Costa Rica, and Argentina — still above the global average of the region — as well as Ecuador, Mexico, and Colombia.
Countries with "high restriction" are Honduras, Peru, Guatemala, Bolivia, and El Salvador, representing 23% of the total Index. Notably, Peru dropped four positions compared to the previous period. Honduras remains at the top of this group, with the rest exchanging positions from the prior edition.
Finally, the "without freedom of expression" category once again includes Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua in the same positions as the previous two editions. Venezuela saw a drop of 6.23 points, the largest difference in results among the three countries in this group.
On the other hand, Brazil showed a positive shift from the previous edition, climbing eight positions.
The Chapultepec Index of the IAPA is coordinated by academics from Andrés Bello Catholic University in Venezuela, through an extensive network of experts in 22 countries across the Americas.
The IAPA is a non-profit organization dedicated to defending and promoting freedom of the press and expression in the Americas. It comprises more than 1,300 publications from the western hemisphere and is based in Miami, Florida, United States.
