The IAPA concerned about the context surrounding litigation against TV Azteca

Miami (November 13, 2025) — The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) expresses its concern about the context in which recent litigation involving TV Azteca and companies of the Grupo Salinas in Mexico is taking place, following the ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) that confirmed fiscal criteria in seven constitutional protection lawsuits promoted by businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego.

The IAPA notes that the public handling of the case —marked by disqualifications from official platforms and calls by various political actors to review broadcast concessions— may create an adverse environment for media work.

According to information released by the network, the tax proceedings have unfolded in parallel to public statements that question the work of the outlet and its journalists. In such circumstances, the IAPA warned, there is a risk that legal disputes may be interpreted or used in ways that affect editorial autonomy or inhibit news coverage.

Pierre Manigault, president of the IAPA and head of the Evening Post Publishing Inc. group in Charleston, South Carolina, stated that the organization “trusts that Mexican authorities will act in accordance with the law and with full respect for constitutional guarantees.” He added that “the IAPA’s interest is to emphasize that any dispute involving media outlets should not result in unintended effects on their journalistic operations.”

For her part, Martha Ramos, president of the IAPA’s Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information and editorial director of Organización Editorial Mexicana (OEM), noted that “it is essential that legal differences between the State and media companies be handled without political interference or rhetoric that could inhibit journalistic work.”

The IAPA reiterated that it will continue monitoring the evolution of the case, with the expectation that Mexican institutions will ensure an environment that allows media to operate with independence, plurality, and respect for the law.

The IAPA is a non-profit organization dedicated to defending and promoting freedom of the press and expression in the Americas. It comprises more than 1,300 publications from the western hemisphere and is based in Miami, Florida, United States.
